Someone is killing the members of Reacher's old military police unit, so he reunites with the survivors to hunt them down. The basis for season two of the Reacher TV series.

Our take

Reacher gets his old squad back, and gets angry

Someone is killing the members of Reacher's old Army investigations unit, and for once the loner has company: the surviving members of his old team regroup in Los Angeles to find out who. Readers love the change of pace, with old-friend banter, dry humor and a team that works like a well-oiled weapon. The New York Times put it in the top tier of the series. We picked this one because it's the Reacher novel behind season 2 of the show, and you don't need the earlier books to follow it. At $1.99 it's an easy weekend.

Who it's for: Thriller fans who want a fast revenge plot and sharp team banter, whether or not they've read Reacher before.

If you liked: Reacher season 2, Mitch Rapp by Vince Flynn

Heads-up: Bloodier than usual for Reacher, and the middle sags a bit.
