A hungover bartender wakes up trapped in the darkness behind a stranger's eyes, in a funny, tender sci-fi puzzle that turns properly dark.

Our take

A hangover that lands you inside a stranger's head

Charlie, a bartender, wakes up in a pitch-black room with a single floating screen, and slowly works out that he's looking out through the eyes of a woman named Minnie. It opens like a Twilight Zone puzzle, settles into a funny, oddly tender two-person story, then takes a hard turn into real darkness. Readers keep praising the originality and the twists, and the four serialized parts pay each other off nicely. We picked this one because nothing else on the free shelf has quite this premise, and the ending lands. Push through the slow first stretch.

Who it's for: Readers who like high-concept weird fiction that mixes humor, romance and horror in one book.

If you liked: The Stone Man by Luke Smitherd, Stephen King

Heads-up: Slow start, lots of swearing, and a sharp tonal swing from light to violent.
