In a walled city that euthanizes the old and sick, Kira grants last wishes to citizens who volunteer to die, until one young volunteer's request shakes her faith in the system. Dystopian, first of three.
Our take
A walled city where dying is a civic duty
Kira lives in Vita Nova, a walled city rebuilt after a plague, where the old and sick are put down for the common good and her job is granting final wishes to those who volunteer to die. When one young volunteer's request doesn't add up, her faith in the system starts to crack. Readers praise the fresh premise, short chapters that end on hooks and a hopeful tone that recalls early Hunger Games. It's faith-based, but readers say the Christian threads are light in this first book. We'd hand this to teens and adults who want a clean dystopia with real moral weight.
