Fourteen short stories from the creator of Sherlock Holmes, mixing adventure with the supernatural: mummies, ghosts, wartime schemes and a pilot's deadly discovery high in the sky.

Our take

Sherlock's creator does sky monsters and mummies

Before Lovecraft, Doyle was sending aviators up into the upper air to meet things that live there. This collection gathers fourteen lesser-known tales: a reanimated mummy stalking Oxford in 'Lot No. 249', an Arctic ghost story aboard a trapped whaler, a hypnotist who seizes other minds. Readers praise the atmosphere and Doyle's range beyond Baker Street, and the title story is the one everyone remembers. Not every tale lands, and it's creepy more than scary. We picked it as a cheap October treat for anyone curious where weird fiction started.

Who it's for: Fans of vintage horror and early science fiction who enjoy short, atmospheric stories.

If you liked: H. P. Lovecraft, Algernon Blackwood

Heads-up: Uneven Victorian collection; some stories feel dated or end abruptly.
