In 1961, with the world on the edge of nuclear war, two unlikely heroes race surviving Nazi agents for a secret that could change everything. Cold War adventure finished by Louis L'Amour's son.

Our take

Louis L'Amour's lost Cold War treasure hunt

Louis L'Amour drafted this around 1960 and never finished it; his son Beau rebuilt it, and the result is a throwback to MacLean-style adventure. It opens with a car chase into the Pyrenees in 1961, then follows two down-on-their-luck arms dealers, a Stasi blackmailer and thirty tons of Nazi gold toward the far end of Patagonia. Readers love the cinematic action and old-school competence. The common gripe is length: lots of backstory and submarine-level technical detail. We'd hand this to anyone who misses paperback adventure with a globe-spanning map.

Who it's for: Readers who grew up on Alistair MacLean, Desmond Bagley or Clive Cussler.

If you liked: Alistair MacLean, Clive Cussler

Heads-up: Long, with slow middle stretches and heavy technical detail.
