Two girls found frozen in the Minnesota woods pull an FBI agent back to the hometown she fled, and toward a past she buried.
Our take
Frozen bodies, small-town secrets, an agent's buried past
When two teenage girls are found frozen in the Minnesota woods, FBI agent Nikki Hunt goes back to the hometown she fled twenty years ago, and the case starts pointing at her own history. Readers praise Nikki as a tough, flawed lead, the dual threads of past and present crimes, and a fast clip that keeps the tension up; it has over 20,000 Goodreads ratings. We picked it as a strong free entry point to a long-running series. Some found the culprit guessable, and the romance subplot leaves a few readers cold. There's no spice to speak of.
