A YouTube baking star's sweet suburban life starts to crack when anonymous texts begin spilling her family's secrets, one twist at a time.

Our take

A baking influencer, an anonymous text, buried secrets

April Masterson's YouTube baking channel looks perfect, until anonymous texts start telling her things about her son and her neighbors she'd rather not know. McFadden switches narrators partway through, and readers say the shift is where the book really grabs them, with false leads stacking up toward her trademark reveal. The common complaint is the very last twist: plenty of readers found it one turn too far. We'd hand this to anyone who wants a fast, slightly ridiculous suburban thriller for a weekend, though it's a step away from our usual fantasy and adventure fare.

Who it's for: Fans of quick domestic thrillers with unreliable narrators and a big final twist.

If you liked: The Housemaid by Freida McFadden, Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn

Heads-up: Slow first half for some, and many readers found the epilogue twist over the top. Domestic suspense, not adventure.
